This was a great episode, and the writers are now showing how they are, to a limited degree at this point, merging the POV's from all four books into each episode. The books are very long 400-600 pages, so it is a challenging task. The writers have also created some new elements and depth to characters, that I have to say is pretty fantastic. Sean Bean is an amazing Ned Stark, even if the character is actually the same age as Jaime Lannister as is Rober (in the books).
The things that I know from the books make seeing Jon saying good bye to Rob, then to Ned, so heartbreaking. We could only hope that we will know who Jon's mother is, as we fans know, we are pretty sure who it is. It makes Ned even that more of an amazing man.
Where to begin:
Well, Tyrion Lannister: I love him! He is not as much fun in the books, as he is here, as he suffered physically a great deal due to his condition, and was consistently mistreated by his father. But here he absolutely delightful! Peter D. deserves an award for his work for what we have already seen and it has only been 2 epis.
Anyway in the book, he and Jaime were always at a detente so to speak, but Cersei always hated him. Jaime and Tyrion become closer later on, but Cersei's feelings neve changed. Lord Tywin hates him because his beloved wife died giving birth to him. If he had been born to a lowborn or poor family, he would have been put out to die, but in this case he was able to live. He is a brilliant man, cunning to the point that he can outmatch his sister, who is smart, viscous and takes no prisoners. On the other hand we have Jaime, who is smart, but he is not too interested in politics and all of its' machinations, but he is a Lannister, be he knows the game well and what it takes to survive.
That said, Joffrey, the little monster he is (which we see a little piece of in this episode, I am rewatching and did he just call my Arya the "c" word? ), is confronted by Tyrion. How I loved this scene; it rocked. There is the little beast, who says why should he care about Bran; a sensitive child as you can see. So Tyrion slaps him, at least four times (wahoo!), to go to the Starks and say how sorry he is, as his presence has been missed. His guard "the Dog" says he will remember, and Tyrion could care less. Side note: Tyrion must be smelly from sleeping in the barn and drinking too much.
So off he goes to breakfast, and he seems to be close with his other nephew and niece: Marcella and Tomen. They discuss if Bran will live, and Tyrion says that the boy will live. Naturally he ignores the looks between Jaime/Cersei. Continuing on: he says some inappropriate things in front of the kids, in response to Jaime asking him if he plans on taking the Black, Cersei leaves.
But one of my fave scenes is Jaime saying Bran will be broken and disfigured, and he is all about a clean death any day. Tyrion responds that speaking for the disfigured and broken, he disagrees, but he also wants to hear what Bran will say when he wakes up. Naturally, he says that to let Jaime know, he knows that Bran saw them together. Then my fave quotes of the episode; wow I am totally loving Tyrion in this series:
Jaime: "My Dear Brother, sometimes I wonder whose side you are on" (because he knows that Tyrion knows that he and Cersei have been doing it for years.)
Tyrion: "My Dear Brother, you wound me, you know how much I love my family." He does not even look at Jaime.
Then we enjoy some lying by Cersei to do some good old fashioned CYA, to Catelyn. She is also worried about what adorable Bran would say, and we see that someone obviously is, as that creepy assassin shows up. Catelyn is a true mama bear, and then Bran's Direwolf takes care of the threat. The direwolf rips the assassins throat out, and then rests comfortably next to Bran. While all of this is happening a fire breaks out so Rob is out of the room and taking care of the fire.
So, realizing something else was going on, Catelyn goes to the room, with the window where Bran had "fallen" from. She finds a long blonde hair while in there. She calls for a little meeting at the godswood, and says she believes Bran was pushed, and she is pretty sure the Lannisters are involved . So she decides to go to Kings Landing to see Ned and tell him what has happened.
Okay now onto other events: well Jon has decided to take leave of his brothers and sisters, and can't wait to get to the Wall. Jaime stops by while Jon is working on what we learn, is a sword for Arya, and they have a little chat. I will have to paraphrase Regina Thorne here, as in her review, she said Jaime seems to always be wearing light colored leather, and not much else, and he is probably staying warm either due to his ice cold blood or his hotness-I go for hotness.
So during his heartwarming chat w/Jon, he sounds like a cold, cynical bastard, as he talks about how Jon will always remember when he kills his first man. He also adds some lovely descriptive words about how men are like "sacks of meat..." amongst other things, and poor Jon looks so young at this point (as adorable as he is). The Jaime shakes his hand, and pulls it to him, to thank him, mockingly for keeping them safe. But this conversation was actually Jaime giving Jon advice; not being a jerk. It is in the guise of sarcasm, and cynicism, as Jaime knows the price of taking an oath.
So Jon goes to say good-bye to Bran. Catelyn is a total bitch, and she complains to Ned about him bringing back a bastard. I always thought it was sad that she never could get past that, and see how much he loved and was loved by his brothers and sisters. However, she never forgave Ned for this transgression, let alone bringing him to be brought up in the castle with their children. However the the three best farewells were:
1)Arya: she is so little, but she loves Jon and vice versa. They had a special relationship, as they were both outsiders in their own way. Then he gives her the sword, "needle" which will become significant later on. I love the way she has Nymeria helping her with the packing, I love Arya. Their hug, was a great moment.
2) Rob: they were very, very, tight here and in the book. They loved each other and their farewell, was so "manly", you could see how sad it was for both of them. Rob left and never looked back, which seemed difficult for him.
3)Ned: He promises to tell Jon about his mother.
Then he leaves with Uncle Benjen, and Tyrion, for the Wall, as Ned goes south with the girls and heads to Kings Landing.
So onwards to Ned and Robert, who are having a chat in a beautiful meadow while lunching on the way to the Kings Landing. Robert mentions Jon's mother, and Ned says he will never tell him. Then they discuss Dany and her vile brother Viserys, and how she has been married off to the horse lord of the Dothraki. So Robert wants to wipe the Targaryens off the face of the earth and reminds Ned of what the Mad King did to his brother, father and then his sister (like Ned needs reminding). Robert wants to have her murdered, but Ned says forget it, as they still have to cross the sea, and they have no boats. He says if they do, they will throw them back across it. However, Robert makes a good point that they could never defeat the Dothraki if they crossed over and made allies with those who still call him "the Usurper".
Ned's having none of it; so moving on. They have not done the flashbacks yet, but they should as Ned/Robert/Jaime are technically all the same age. They were all about 17 when the war ended, so now they would all presumable all in their mid 30's; but for the show the ages of all the characters have been changed. They really need to as it would help those who have not read the books.
So we see a little bit of Dany who is very grumpy and sore from riding. Also, when she is having sex w/Drogo, she stares at the dragon eggs which seem to give her a sense of peace. Then she gets a little lesson from one of her slave girls about how to make the Khal happy. She teaches her that love is in the eyes, so Dany uses her new skills, and achieves success.
Finally, the events at Kings Landing, which are foreshadowing of more bad things to come. Sansa is walking Lady, and she appears to be the only Stark who puts a leash on her direwolf. Anway, Joffrey stops by while she is meeting The Dog, and Ser Ilyn Payne, who are scaring her. So, he takes her for a walk, and there they see Arya and the butcher boy practicing sword play with wooden sticks. Joffrey starts being a jerk, and it ends up with Nymeria biting Joffrey's arm and Arya disarming him while he whines like a little girl.
Then she runs, and smartly gets Nymeria to run away to avoid death. She then waits to be found by the Lannister guards. Skip to later that night when Ned learns that she has been found by the Lannisters and is in front of the King. Ned is enraged, and naturally Joffrey has made up some lie about what happened, Arya is calling him a liar, and Cersei if full of her usual lies, but dangerous crap.
Highlights:
1. Robert tells Cersei to shut up as she wines about how Joffrey will be scarred for life.
2. Robert says children fight, and that is the way it is.
3. The golden moment: Robert looking at Joffrey and sneering "you let that little girl disarm you?"
4. So naturally Cersei needs to get a wolf killed and it ends up being Sansa's wolf "Lady". Prior to this poor Sansa is put on the spot and says she can't remember what happened. She finally shows she has a brain! Yeah! Naturally Arya starts screaming liar, and then they both start screaming when Cersei decides that Lady must be killed.
Ned says he will do it, as the wolf is of the north. Poor Ned, he is so sad, and also starting to sense he has fallen into a pit of vipers. Things are getting dangerous and the game has begun!!! The he kills the poor wolf, and as he does it, Bran wakes up.
Wahoo! So awesome epi, can't wait for 1.03!
