The Borgias: 1.07 "Death on a Pale Horse"

Well, I just accidentally deleted the first 1/2 of this post, so just as a reminder, I do not write in order, but by people/events as I think it is clearer that way. This episode is dedicated to the wonderful Machiavelli. Here it goes!**

We will begin with Sancia and Juan who are having a wonderful time romping around in his ever so large bed. She stops in the middle of their fun to look out the window to see her young husband, Joffre, playing with the doves, and being called in to lunch by his mother. Sancia says "My husband plays with feathers", and then informs Juan, that her hubby certainly does not have his "vigor" and they continue their afternoon delight. Wahooo!

Cesare and Lucrezia
Cesare is in a beautiful winter version of his princely gear, as he and Lucrezia go for a chat before she leaves. Cesare asks "Why do you have to leave?" Lucrezia says becaue he is my husband and papa needs his armies. But Cesare knows something happened and he wants to know what it is. Lucrezia knows that he can see right through her and walks away as he asks "where has my younger sister gone?". He says he will kill the Lord Sforza if he has done something to her. Then, Lucrezia, back to her brother, is then asked by Cesare what Sforza does for fun. Lucrezia tells him hunting and the marital bed. Cesare says "I dislike him already", and sounds like a child when he says it.

But Lucrezia says have no fear brother he can do neither;  " God is Good".  I love how she sits so straight and confident when she says it.  Cesare asks if Sforza will die from this accident? Lucrezia says no. So Cesare calms down, and says "You are no longer a child sis. I will never forgive him for that. "  Then Lucrezia says "you let me marry the bastard, when you knew that I did not want to go, and now look at my life." Ouch.  Poor Cesare, he closes his eyes, gets up and walks away.

"I didn't mean it that way, I am so sorry."

Well guess where we see Cesare next? Well, Lucrezia has left, so he is at at the convent where annoying Ursula, oh, I mean Sister Martha, is living. Apparently she unwittingly chose a convent that he has been patronizing for a while now.  So he goes to her room, and she will not let him near her, as Jesus is her love now.

The she says something that shocks Cesare:
"You have a power Cardinal Cesare Borgia, a strength, a destiny that even you don't recognize. You read my heart which may indeed have been the devil's insight and you delivered me to God. You can use the strength for good or for ill, but I have no doubt it will be used and the whole of Italy will be changed by it. "

This comment annoys me because he did not "read her heart" she lead him on with words, and the idea that she understood and cared for him without knowing him.  If I did not know any better, I would have thought that she saw his sadness and despair and being naive and foolish, did not think he took her words seriously. She says she will never love another, and then does not let him touch her.  He just stares at her, and is very confused, and sad, as he does not understand what just happened.  Hopefully, this will be the last time we see her, as he needs a more exciting, vibrant lover.

Back at Pope Headquarters
Daddy P informs Cesare that the French army is headed towards Rome. Cesare says they still have time before they reach Rome. Daddy P knows this could be a big problem as the cardinals will start to take sides. Daddy P and says this is a "...veritable apocalypse!" Then Daddy Pope and Cesare fight about the usual: Cesare wants to take care of things, and leave Juan out of it.  Cesare is afraid that Juan will not be able to lead the papal and Romagne armies, and outsmart the French. Cesare knows Juan is not bright enough to take care of the situation, which is very grave. We know our boy Cesare takes care of things.

Sexy prince uniform is on and Cesare is read to deal.  So he goes to have a little chat with the VC Sforza, whose cousin the Duke of Milan,( you remember him right? he threw food and urine down into his cousin's cell in the hall of his hall for fun), will allow free passage through Milan.  Cesare says this is a betrayal!  VC Sforza is mocking Cesare throughout this entire conversation. So as he walks away, a small smile on his face, Cesare says to him "I think you have something to say to me, and you had better do it now". VC Sforza, says of course I do! Cesare reminds him that if he and his cousin; husband to his sister, do not remain steadfast he will have to get rid of them (wink, wink).  Then the VC, in a veiled threat says that perhaps his sister, Lucrezia should inform her husband of this fact. Cesare is standing there with this look on his face, like damn it! as he just got outsmarted. Ouch!

Sexy Prince Uniform!

Now we are at a meeting of the Cardinals with Daddy P.  So, Daddy Pope decides that they will excommunicate Florence, the Friar Wack Job and Della Rovere, if Florence allows the French troops into their city.  However, none of the Cardinals like this idea. Daddy P tells them he is not going anywhere!!!!  Meanwhile Cesare is sitting there, staring straight ahead with a "Oh crap, this is the worse idea ever, and I am soo embarrassed right now." , look on his face. Well no one goes for it, and the VC Sforza decides to  speak.

The VC has excellent advice!  He knows that excommunication will do nothing, and that the invasion is happening, so they had better suck it up, and figure out a way to deal with it. They may have to accept their fates! AKA: the Borgia Pope may be hitting the road.

The French Invasion has begun!
Alas the French have begun the invasion of Italy and they hope will eventually lead to the invasion of Rome, and the removal of that horrid Borgia Pope.  So there we are at Lucca, where Charles is sooo psyched to try out his double-chain cannon ball thing, and thus says Non! to terms offered by Lucca. We also learn that the French general is shocked by the fact that the Italians seem to have no words for ordinance and weapons of war!  Mon Dieu!

The conquest of Lucca is vile, with children being murdered as well as women, and the local soldiers. Della Rovere is horrified, and starts hearing in his head the crazy rantings of Friar Wack Job, about how a cardinal would set a city awash in blood, blah, blah. You know the typical rantings of those who partook in the Spanish Inquisition.   So, at dinner, Charles n'est pas content!  Della Rovere ne veut pas manger! Della Rovere does not partake in retelling the conquests of the day! Charles reminds him that he warned him of what would happen, so he commands him to eat.

Florence is next on the conquest list. Della Rovere asks that he bring them terms, so violence may be avoided. Excellent! Charles, goaded on by his general, decides let's take them for all they've got.  So, let's see, $400,000 duckets so they can pay for our invasion, a hostage from each major family, and free passage through the city with 25,000 of their troops. Magnifique! this is the best war ever.

Next we see Della Rovere dining with a Medici and Machiavelli.

Florence
Della Rovere lays out the terms, and  Machiavelli says they must review this with the Signoria. But, alas, the Medici w/no name, says yes, to all of the terms.  Machiavelli says are you kidding me with this? We are giving away our beautiful Florence to those Barbarians? Well, the Medici, w/no name, is scared because of the Lucca conquest, which has been a successful strategy. Machiavelli knows this and says  the invasion of Lucca "...sounds increasingly like genius.".  Machiavelli says fine, and asks DR if this was his genius of a plan.  Della Rovere asks him if he has ever seen the "carnage" that comes with war.  Machiavelli just looks at him and simply says: "Let us drink then, to the great god Carnage".  I love his use of words, genius. He will make a good partner to Cesare in the future.

I think he is running a close second to my favorite family in Naples.

As they are hanging out by the Florentine gates waiting for the French, Machiavelli says he has heard that DR might be excommunicated, and DR says well it seems Florence may be excommunicated as well if they allow the French save passage. Machiavelli says "Well then, that depends on one's definition of surrender. "  Wahooo! Machiavelli is not giving the city up that easily.

Chatting about excommunication while awaiting Charles.
Now, this conversation is the reason for my dedication:
Charles and the French troops arrive at the gates.
Machiavelli: "I bid his Royal Highness and the armies of France, Welcome to the fair city of Florence. But it would be politic your highness if you rode through our gracious city with your lance at rest.
Charles: "at rest?" (WTF?)
Machiavelli: Yes, your lance at point is a symbol of conquest, and our gracious Florence has not been conquered.  On the contrary, we welcome you with open arms."
Charles: "Senor Machiavelli?"
Machiavelli:  "your Highness?"
Charles: "Our lance at rest, prevents our entrance to your fair city." (mmm, so it looks like it will be at point, hah! I win.)
Machiavelli: "Perhaps your Highness, it would be angled backwards"
Charles; "of what would that be a symbol?"
Machiavelli:  (turning around as he rides into the city, waiting for the French to FOLLOW him) "of your Highness's infinite resourcefulness."  aka. what are you stupid?
We love you Machiavelli!!!

Lucrezia
The Lord Sforza is informing Lucrezia that she should be glad that she is married to him as her papa is in danger of being deposed. Poor Lucrezia says she will always be her father's daughter. She says that the Lord Sforza's armies, as well as the Lady Catarina's are her father's, as part of the betrothal package.  She says it is dishonorable if he does not keep his word. But Lord Sforza says that is no longer the reality, as the Lady Catarina has already revoked her support, and they will do nothing if the French show up. In fact they will join their armies with the French, in their fight to depose Daddy P. Then Lucrezia almost throws up, when her charming husband informs her that there is nothing dishonorable about removing the swine, that is the Borgia Pope from Rome. He is just a bundle of hearts and flowers isn't he?

Giulia Farneze
Daddy P sends Giulia Farneze to visit Lucrezia, and as she gets off her horse asks if she is at the home of Lucrezia Borgia, Paolo reminds her, it is Sforza. I find it interesting that no one calls Lucrezia by her married name, even as she was sold off to Lord Sforza. So, she arrives and is told Lucrezia is indisposed. The Lord Sforza and Catarina are there to meet her. Catarina asks for some info on the Pope, and Guilia says he will never leave, as he has the papal armies, and those of the Sforza's.  Catarina says the House of Borgia is doomed, and their troops will remain in the Romagna. So Giulia asks again about the marriage terms, and Lord Sforza says he will do nothing as the rest of Italy has done. I LOVE how Giulia gets up, turns around and leaves, without a word. She knows that she must get Lucrezia out of there ASAP.  I hope in these last 2 epis we see more of Giulia, as she is a ballsy chick, and I would like to see more of that here. She is a nice match for the growing cleverness of Lucrezia.

Well, Lucrezia thinks she has swamp fever again, but Giulia tells her no, you are preggers, and it seems not with the Lord Sforza's child.  Lucrezia does not seem happy that she is pregnant. Giulia says they must leave before the household wakes up and hit the road ASAP.

Finally, my darling Prince Alfonso believes the apocalypse has arrived, as everyone else seems to as well. It seems everyone in Italy loves the word "apocalypse". Anyway, the French troops are on their way to their fair city, and they may need to leave. He hoped his father could counsel him (as I do not see Prince Alfonso as a great leader of troops).  Alas his father has died in his sleep. Alfonso is afraid, as he no longer has the idea that he is backed up by King Ferrante and his former  rep as a psycho, Alfonso starts to cry. I think he may be 80% scared, 20% sad.  I do not think he is quite the leader his father was, or perhaps we have not seen enough crazy yet. Remember how he kicked Della Rovere out of his home because he brought violence with him?  Anyway I hope I get my Naples fix before the end of the season.

So, that's it, here's to a great episode tonight!!
