Jon Snow
The 998th Lord Commander of the Nights Watch:
And he demands RESPECT.
THE NORTH
The Wall
The Lord Commander & The One True King
The Desk of Power |
Jon, most likely to punish himself for breaking his vows, and loving Ygritte, has chosen Olly as his steward. He also secretly wants to kill the kid, but feels guilty having that thought, because Olly thinks that he saved him.
Stannis is a smart man, and he goes to see Jon, which is a clever move. He can pitch THE OFFER, as a way of having vengeance for his brother, not as a King, who needs The Stark name. Jon is clearly annoyed, and says, yet again, that he is The Lord Commander of the NW, and he rejects THE OFFER. He asks Stannis when he will be leaving, as he does not have enough supplies to feed all of his troops. Winter is coming and so are The White Walkers, and he needs to begin preparations to secure the wall. Stannis says that his team should be out in a fortnight. But he has some more advice on being a good leader for my boy.
Teachable Moments for Jon Snow, by Stannis |
#3: What do we do with the Wildlings? Stannis tells Jon that he can either kill them, (then burn them) or you guessed it, do some purifying of souls.
#4: Choose a leader (which we know Jon cannot do), such as Tormund, who he will be able to work with down the line.
#5: I loved this moment: "You will be sending Ser Alliser Thorne to Eastwatch?" (the farthest possible place from Jon)
Jon: " I was taught to keep your enemies close."
Stannis: "Whoever told you that, didn't have any enemies."
#6: Remember that honor got your father killed
Stannis leaves, and then we have a conversation between Jon and Davos. Jon is also proving that power makes him look sexier than ever.
Quick Thought: The last part of your vows include guarding the realm. Do you think that Roose"Traitorous Ass" Bolton will safeguard The North? |
He killed MY BROTHER; I know exactly what he is. I am Lord Commander, and getting vengeance is something that I cannot do. |
Lord Commander Jon Snow
It's Jon's first day as the boss, and he has called a big meeting of all the members of the NW. Winter is coming, and running of the Wall, and protecting it, are his top priorities. The room is quiet as he assigns the first task of updating the latrines, as Ser Alliser, is most likely expecting this position. Jon, practicing the art of intimidation, looks at Ser Alliser and names one of the men to lead the project.
Jon is putting those teachable moments to good use, and has decided to make Ser Alliser, Head Ranger. It is an unexpected honor for him, and you can see that he is very pleased.
He asks Ser Janos to head the rebuilding of Greyguard, and he refuses to do it. He insults Jon, by calling him a bastard and that this job was beneath him. He continues berating Jon, and Jon asks him if he is disobeying a direct order. He says yes, and Jon asks Olly for his sword. Jon's crew drag him outside, and put the block down. Jon takes a swig of ale, and brings his bad boy self outside.
I will stop here, because this scene is a perfect example of the ridiculous choices the writers have made by changing words and actions for absolutely no reason. I can not stress enough how important and awesome this scene is, and they did a good job, but it did not resonate, as it did in the book.
Let's take a moment to review the scene from the book:
Book Jon is described as having very cold, demeanor, which he got from Ned, and he might even look dangerous to some. He carries Long Claw across his back, the scar is across his eye and cheek, and Ghost is constantly by his side. He has very conflicted feelings about being a leader and although he is his father's son; he is NOT Robb.
The book version of this moment, is one that I have been waiting for since Season 1. It is a HUGE moment for Jon, because it makes a statement, that disobedience will not be tolerated. Book Jon is also fifteen years old, a man during this time, and is under no illusions, that many view him as a traitor. He allows Janos to sleep on it, and confronts him again in the morning. Janos continues to berate him, and he calls him a "beastling", (a warg) and names Ghost as evidence for it. Jon decides to hang him, but changes his mind. Men are not executed at the wall, they are executed for abandoning it, so it was a bold move, and the men were shocked by it.
The awesome part is Janos believes that Jon is showing him mercy, and calls him a coward. Jon says the infamous, and powerful words: "Edd, fetch me a block", and someone got a new pair of warm boots. Jon looks up and Stannis gives him the infamous nod.
HBO Jon asks Olly to bring him his sword. I have no idea why this is changed, but my guess is that it is something a Knight would ask of his squire, and reinforces that his role as Lord Commander. We see him build up his courage with that last swig of ale; something he did not need in the book.
It would have been even more powerful, if they had stayed true to the book. But I won't deny that this scene was pretty damn amazing, and the anger we see in Jon as he executes Janos, was on point. I am disappointed, but I won't deny that Kit Harrington was fantastic.
She says how the called her "Brienne the Beauty", and mocked her for being big and ugly. I know, it's hard to imagine this with Gwendoline Christie, but Book Brienne was very unattractive, and it became worse when, "Biter", bit off her cheek.
Finally, Brienne is herself again because she has a dual purpose; guarding Sansa, and she can finally avenge Renly. She repeats, yet again that she saw the shadow with the face of Stannis.
That wraps up The North.

Jon is listening to Janos beg for mercy |
I don't see any regret, do you? |
He looks up and sees Stannis who gives him "The Nod":
And my boy has earned the respect of one Stannis Baratheon.
Sansa and Petyr
"There's no justice in the world-not unless we make it"-Petyr Baelish to Sansa Stark.
Sansa and Petry are looking at Moat Cailin, and Sansa realizes that she is going to Winterfell. Petyr informs Sansa that she will be marrying Lord Bolton. She thinks it is Roose 'Traiterous Ass" Bolton, and says that she will kill herself rather than marry the man who killed her brother. Poor Sansa, she has no idea what a monster she is about to marry, and honestly, I do not think that Petyr knows about the Sadist Ramsay. He was obsessed with Cat, and I don't think that he would ever marry Sansa to a monster.
Petry has clearly been training her to no longer be a victim, thus the above quote. But Sansa has not turned the corner as of yet, and she is not clever enough to use the power of her name and beauty to her advantage. She agrees that she will go to Winterfell, and marry the Sadist Ramsay. She has no expression on her face when she makes this decision, and this must become her battle face.
We definitely know that there is a resistance movement in the castle, and our first clue is when the maid says "The North Remembers". She give Sansa a look that says "say the word, and we're ready to take back what is yours", which is a nice connection to the letter Lady of Mormont sent to Stannis. Sansa looks shocked, which worries me, as I do not think Sansa realizes the power of her name in The North, since people believe that she is the last living Stark. She is at war, albeit a different one, as it seems people are waiting for their true leader to return.
Winterfell
Lord Roose "Traitorous Ass" Bolton &
The Sadist Ramsay
It's Sunday dinner at the Bolton's, and it's just what you would expect from two monsters, only one is actually smart. However, before we begin, I can't forget to mention the beautiful courtyard; it's new, as it is being rebuilt. There are flayed bodies being hung for all to see, and more in a cart waiting for display.
Ramsay is getting scolded by his Dad, regarding his torture and flaying of people who will not pay their taxes. They are all apparently refusing to acknowledge any ruler who is not a Stark. Dad is very unhappy, and tells him to stop eating, and pay attention. Dad informs his son, that he needs to stop being a sadistic idiot, and learn that he has responsibilities as a legitimate son. King Tywin was holding the kingdom together, and with his death, they can no longer count on his support. They do not have enough men to hold the North, or Winterfell, which means that he will need a bride. Who is this bride? Poor Sansa Stark.
The Arrival of Sansa and Petyr
Sansa and Petry arrive and we see Sansa, greet Lord Bolton. She puts on her mask, hesitates, and greets Lord Bolton, and Ramsay says that he is so excited for their upcoming nuptials.
This is all new to me, but while Sansa is trying hard not to scream or throw up on the Father and Son team, we see a very jealous girlfriend. I don't know what her purpose will be, as she is not a character from the book. I don't know why anyone would want to be his girlfriend, but whatever.
Theon is witnessing all the meet and greet and looks terrified:
We already talked about Sansa and being given a room.
The Alliance
Petyr and the Sadist Ramsay
Petyr finds Ramsay and says that he knows nothing about him, which is a problem. Ramsay informs him that he will tie good care of her; yeah right. Petyr is still suspicious, so I am sure that he will learn that he is a monster.
Petyr and Lord Roose "Traitorous Ass" Bolton
They are having a conversation regarding their new alliance, and that he delivered Sansa as promised. Littlefinger's motives are suddenly very unclear; he has either made a grave mistake by marrying Sansa to a monster, or the writers have suddenly decided that he no longer cares about Sansa. He has been protecting Sansa, and projecting his love of Cat, so, it's off book, but should I still be confused?!
They have a discussion regarding the fact that the Lannisters have been weakened by the death of King Tywin, and are vulnerable. Lord Bolton knows Littlefinger is up to something, as he just received a bird from the Vale with a message from Cersei. She believes that he is still at the Vale, and he is gambling with his life and position as Warden of the North. There is also the pesky detail that there remains a death warrant for Sansa. We know Littlefinger is all about gambling, as we know that he bet on the Tyrell's killing King Sociopath.
Littlefinger says that Margaery loves Sansa, and reminds him that the last time the Eyrie and the North combined forces they ended the Targaryen dynasty. We also know, that no one tries to tame the North, as it is just too wild and large.
Brienne and Pod
Our twosome have followed Petyr and Sansa, and are looking at Moat Cailin. Brienne decides that they will go around it, and eventually end up at Winterfell. We have a short backstory about Pod, and how he managed to become Tyrion's squire. She apologizes to Pod, and says that she will teach him the finer points of becoming a Knight.

"The North Remembers" Damn straight, and it's time for payback. |

She also tells the horrible story of how her father had a ball, and a cruel trick was played on her. It was the classic, unpopular girl, who receives attention from the popular guy, and it ends up that he was winning a bet. She says that Renly danced with her, and helped her to regain some sense of self respect, as she was dancing with the King's brother.
